The Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA) is pleased to announce Marvin A. Konstam, MD, FHFSA as the recipient of the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award. As an internationally recognized pioneer and expert in the field of heart failure, this prestigious award will pay tribute to his exemplary career in scholarship, investigation, teaching, and leadership. Dr. Konstam joins an elite list of past Lifetime Achievement Award winners with this year’s recognition.
A special Lifetime Achievement Award Spotlight will be featured in the July edition of the Journal Cardiac Failure and will be posted on the HFSA website. The award presentation will take place at the 22nd Annual Scientific Meeting in Nashville, TN on Sunday, September 16, 2018.
Marvin A. Konstam, MD, is Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) and Chief Physician Executive of The CardioVascular Center at Tufts Medical Center (TuftsMC). He graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University and completed training at Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women's Hospitals. Dr. Konstam is recipient of the TUSM Distinguished Faculty Award.
Dr. Konstam’s primary investigational areas are ventricular remodeling, novel pharmaceutical and device treatment, and quality of care. He has provided leadership for numerous clinical trials and has published over 300 articles and over 35 books, monographs, and chapters.
Dr. Konstam was lead author of the first heart failure (HF) Clinical Practice Guideline, through the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research and has served on the HF Guideline panels of the American Heart Association / American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA) (including its first edition). He has served as a member of the Food and Drug Administration’s Cardiovascular and Renal Advisory Panel and as Senior Advisor for Cardiovascular Diseases at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. He has consulted for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on device coverage and on improving quality of care.
Dr. Konstam was a founding member of HFSA, served as its President (2002‒2004), and was instrumental in driving designation of Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology as an official secondary subspecialty. He previously served as President of the Association of Professors of Cardiology and as Chair of ACC’s Council on Academic Cardiology. He presently serves on ACC’s Health Affairs Committee, on CMS’ MACRA Clinical Advisory Committee, and on HFSA’s Publications Committee. Dr. Konstam has been named among the “Best Doctors in America” for 16 consecutive years.
Dr. Konstam is married to Varda Konstam, PhD, with children Amanda and Jeremy.

The HFSA Lifetime Achievement Award is presented by the Executive Council of the HFSA. The purpose of this award is to recognize a lifetime body of work by an individual who has made a significant and sustained contributions to the field of heart failure.
