HFSA News President's Updates
Nancy Albert Lab Coat
HFSA President 2020-2021 Nancy M. Albert, PhD, CCNS, FHFSA

It is such an honor to be able to serve as your 2020-2021 President of the Heart Failure Society of America. As we move into our 26th year as an organization, I thank our former presidents for setting a strong foundation and keeping a focus on our vision and mission. We have the structures, systems and processes in place to be YOUR home for heart failure

Specifically, I’d like to thank our immediate Past President, Biykem Bozkurt, MD, PhD, FHFSA, for her leadership, passion, kindness, collaborative leadership style and attention to details; and also, the presidents that were instrumental in bring this organization to life and meeting the needs of our members: Jay Cohn, MD, Arthur Feldman, MD, PhD, Milton Packer, MD, Marvin Konstam, MD, FHFSA, Gary Francis, MD, Barry Greenberg, MD, FHFSA, Douglas Mann, MD, Thomas Force, MD, JoAnn Lindenfeld, MD, Mandeep Mehra, MD, Chris O’Connor, MD, FHFSA, and Randy Starling, MD, MPH, FHFSA, who has just completed his service on the Board of Directors.

We are a multidisciplinary organization and our board of directors reflects our diversity! I am humbled to be the first nursing President and am excited to work closely with the rest of the executive committee officers: President-Elect Mark Drazner, MD, MSc, Treasurer John Teerlink, MD, FHFSA, Secretary Mona Fiuzat, PharmD, FHFSA, and Past-President Biykem Bozkurt, MD, PhD, FHFSA. Our Board of Directors has decreased in size for the coming year (from 21 to 11, including the leadership team), in an effort to be more nimble and allow for everyone to participate fully in discussions and decision making. All 6 members, Maria Rosa Costanzo, MD, James Fang, MD, FHFSA, Michael Felker, MD, FHFSA, Gregg Fonarow, MD, Michael Givertz, MD, FHFSA, and Colleen McIlvennan, DNP, ANP, FHFSA, are fully engaged, passionate and committed to HFSA, and I am looking forward to our year together.

Early in 2020, the Board of Directors developed a strategic plan and we look forward to continuing and growing initiatives that were previously implemented, for example, the Heart Failure Research Foundation and Community 365 with the support of the talented HFSA staff, under the leadership of our CEO John Barnes. In 2021 we also look forward to implementing initiatives that have been in development: an advanced Heart Failure Provider Certification (HF-Cert), the first phase of our Optimal Medical Therapy in Heart Failure (OMT-HF) initiative that involves a certificate program (aimed at improving knowledge and decision making of non-expert heart failure providers) and advancing opportunities for our heart failure community to connect with colleagues, learn from experts and grow professionally. For our patient members, we hope to increase your awareness of advances in heart failure and provide guidance and support in helping you live your life with the highest quality possible.

Finally, we all know that the strength of any organization is its membership. I look forward to hearing from you, our members in the coming year! Please let me know what we should do more of, how we can meet your needs more fully, how we can enhance the value of your membership and grow our membership. We are planning to transform our Journal of Cardiac Failure and look forward to hearing your thoughts about the changes we are planning!

All the best to everyone as we continue to navigate the pandemic,
