Guidance for Program Directors – ERAS/NRMP Match for AHFTC Fellowship

The Heart Failure Society of America will sponsor the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS®) and the National Resident Matching Program’s (NRMP) Medical Specialties Matching Program (MSMP) for the 2020 academic year.

Most ACGME-accredited Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology (AHFTC) programs have committed to participating in both the ERAS and NRMP for 2020. Interested Program Directors can find guidance on ERAS for the AHFTC July 2020 cycle below.

ERAS for the AHFTC July 2020 cycle:

Cost to Individual Programs
  • Institution registration fee $250 (already paid if has cardiology match or any other subspecialty NRMP match )
  • Cost to individual Programs: $120 for each matched applicant
Participating in ERAS

Visit ERAS for Participating Programs below to learn more about participating. ERAS provides a centralized, but flexible solution to the residency application and documents distribution process.

ERAS Community Site will be your go-to place to connect with other members, ask advice, and share expertise about all things about the Program Director’s Workstation (PDWS). To access this site, users must have an AAMC account and granted access to an ERAS program. The program’s Designated Institutional Official (DIOs) is responsible for granting access to the program users.

Benefits of a Match
  • Allows applicants and programs to consider all options before making a decision
  • Creates an impartial venue for matching programs' and applicants' preferences
  • Provides applicants with the opportunity to cross-apply to multiple specialties participating in the Medical Specialties Matching Program
  • Allows for applicants to participate in the Match as a couple
  • Establishes a uniform date for appointments to fellowship training programs
  • Legitimizes recruitment by mainstreaming our subspecialty's fellowship selection process
  • Provides a uniform time for both applicants and programs to make their selections without pressure
  • Levels the playing field among programs
  • Allows programs to interview more applicants
  • Eliminates undue pressure on applicants to make a binding decision before all interviews are complete
All-In Policy

All AHFTC programs participating in the Match will use an “All-In Policy.” That means that all participating programs are committed to offering all funded, ACGME accredited positions through the Match and offering no positions outside of the Match. The only exception is for military appointees to civilian programs based on pre-existing arrangements between civilian fellowship programs and military branch GME offices.

As part of the requirements to sponsor a Match with the NRMP, the HFSA has committed that 75% of spots throughout the entire fellowship that programs intend to fill (ACGME accredited and funded) will be offered in the Match. The NRMP also requires participation of 75% of accredited AHFTC programs in the Match. These 75% minimum thresholds for both positions and programs are criteria set by the NRMP because Matches in which the majority of programs participate are more successful. Based on our in-person meetings and subsequent survey, we believe that we have achieved in excess of that number of committed programs.
