I was born on the south side of Chicago. Growing up everyone called me Gee Gee. As an only child, I was the apple of my daddy’s eye, and he always worked hard to make sure I knew that. My mom always told people, “I’m daddy’s baby and my mommy’s maybe.” When you looked at us, we looked like we could be fraternal twins.
I earned a bachelor degree in business administration, and 20 years later, a master’s degree in project management. For over two decades, I worked in various positions in the health insurance industry. During that career, I realized that most people don’t fully understand their health concerns or how to maintain a healthy quality of life. I returned to school in 2021 and became a Certified Health and Wellness Coach. Now, not only can I help people through my own experience, I can guide them through their health challenges.
I certainly enjoy being active. It includes roller skating, bowling, working out, traveling, dancing and now I’m learning how to play golf. I love dining and trying new restaurants.
Both my father and I seemed pretty healthy for most of our lives. We had our issues now and then, but neither of us felt very concerned. The year 2002 brought new health concerns that I didn’t realize would persist, progress, and change our lives over the next decade. We both were going through mysterious health issues for years. We had been to multiple doctors for issues with shortness of breath, edema, bilateral carpal tunnel, torn tendons, digestive issues, etc. It seemed like no one could figure out what the underlying issue were.
It wasn’t until my dad’s heart was functioning at 20% did the doctors figure out the cause. It was hATTR Amyloidosis. I learned the condition was hereditary. His doctor had explained that it was a gene variant that can cause issues in the nerves, the heart, and the digestive system. His diagnosis has saved my life. I am now in treatment to slow the progression of this dreadful disease.
My goal in life right now is bringing awareness about this condition.
